Japanese Ghost Story : The creepy dancing girl

Translated from Japanese by Shishou(師匠)

Ghost Story

The incident which I'm about to narrate happened when I was still an elementary-school kid.

That day, I and my father had decided to visit the nearest DIY store to purchase some goods.
It was around 6 in the evening, and I remember it was somewhat of a chilly evening.

There were some apartment complexes on the other side of the store and in-between these complexes existed a narrow path.

That was the place where I saw that thing.

I was sitting in the car with my dad, talking about what we'd buy from the store.

"Dad, Dad,  What we'll buy?"
"Some timber and a saw."

"I hear some clattering sound from there. Can we go and see it?"
"O-- Okay..."

I don't know why I asked for such a foolish thing.
The next moment I realized, we were parked in front of that narrow path.

"Wh-----?!!"
"What happened?"

There was a girl in font of us who was dancing in an eerily manner. She was wearing short-sleeves, miniskirt and sandals.

It didn't take me long to realize that she wasn't human.

Moreover, I could see her clearly even though there was no street light present. It seemed like she was emitting light from her own body. Also, I found that the area around her was much chillier.
I got very scared and hid inside the car.

Dad asked me "what happened?" with a face that made me realize that he couldn't see any of it.
I shouted "A creepy girl is dancing over there!", but of course he didn't believe my words.

We passed that path again while returning from the store, but this time there was nobody there.

Fifteen years have passed since that incident. I still come across that path once in a while but I haven't seen that girl again since that incident.

What was that thing? A person?
Why was she dancing like that? These are the few question that still puzzle me to this day.

  1. I thought she was a youkai like Zasshiki Warashi. I kinda imagined it in a traditional outfit (short yukata, mini skirt and geta). But I still wonder why she dances in the night though. A ritual or maybe it was just a hobby? But either way, she kinda like sirens or mermaids, which have power to lure people. Instead of singing, maybe she dances.

    1. I believe she was trying to lure our narrator. As we read in the story, only the narrator could see her. So, maybe she's only visible to small kids. Maybe, she lures kids and feasts on them.
I think zashiki warashi are good ghosts, so she might not be one.
