Japanese Urban Legend: The Taxi Driver

Translated from Japanese by Shishou(師匠)

Urban Legend

Backseat Ghost

This story was narrated to me by one of my friend, who said that the story was a real experience of his dad.

I don't want to disclose his dad's name, so I will use the pseudonym A to refer him.

A-san is an experienced Taxi-driver who has been in this businesses for about 35 years. He drives the taxi from morning till late night, always helping the passengers to reach their destination in minimum time.

It was a rainy night. A-san was a little depressed as he didn't get many passengers that day. While riding his taxi back to the garage, he passed a desolate road that went thorough a hilly area. He had used this road a couple of times, but today was the first time he was crossing it late at night in a rainy weather.

Japanese Cryptic: Bathroom

Translated from Japanese by Shishou(師匠)

Cryptic Story

Well, I should head out now.
I look at my watch to see that it's already late in the afternoon.
Oh! I haven't washed my face yet.
I know it's a pain but I have to do it.
I head to the bathroom, turn the tap on, and splash water on my face.
I take the face-cleanser on my fingers and apply it on my face.
I massage it on my face and splash some more water to produce a heavy lather.
I can hear the sound of water droplets going down the drain.
Ah! I've wasted a lot of water, I should wash my face quickly.

With my eyes closed, I search for the stream of water.
...Where is it? I can't find the tap...
I somehow open my eyes while withstanding the burning sensation of lather.
Tap...tap...where is it...?
Here it is...
I grab the tap and turn it on. The water starts flowing.
I quickly wash my face and dry it with towel.

I want to check my face in the mirror but I'm scared.
I quickly get out of the bathroom and run away from the house.

Japanese Ghost Story : Nana-Chan

Translated from Japanese by Shishou(師匠)

Ghost Story

I often used to spend my time alone during my childhood. My parents owned an ancient, run-down ancestral house in the outskirts of a village where there were no kids coeval with me. I did have my brother, but he was very little at that time so I didn't play much with him.
I would often feel lonely because my younger brother got all the attention of my parents and grandparents. Anyway, to cure my loneliness, I'd would explore the house everyday, which was pretty big with numerous rooms, and would find myself playing with various objects I found in the rooms.

In the south-west area of our house, we had a storage room that was cluttered with various tools and objects. I spent a lot of time in the room playing with the objects as if they were toys.

When did I find that mirror? I honestly don't remember much. I just know that it was already in a worn-out condition: no frame, no handle, just a circular reflective surface. Despite being an old mirror, it clearly reflected the surroundings without any fogginess.
A few days later, I was playing with the mirror, checking my face, when I saw the reflection of a girl in the mirror. Startled, I turned back to see this uninvited guest, but what I found was...nothing!
I understood that she could only be seen in the mirror. Of course, I found it a little creepy, but I wasn't scared of her. She was a long-haired, fair-skinned girl.

Japanese Cryptic: Where's my key?

Translated from Japanese by Shishou(師匠)

Cryptic Story

When I was returning home from work, I got hit with this sudden realization of not having the house-key with me.

Shit! I'm in serious trouble now.

What should I do...? It's already 2AM; the landlord must be fast asleep by now.

I don't even have a duplicate key....

Did I drop it somewhere...but I remember putting it in my wallet.

Don't tell me! Did my money...

...Thank god, my money is safe in my wallet.

It does seem like I dropped the key somewhere.

I really don't want to waste my money on hotel tonight...

...Tch, I'm going to ask for help from the landlord.

-Next Morning-

I really messed up yesterday. The landlord was enraged at me for disturbing his sleep.

Well, I'll have to get a new key now.

aa...huh...? What the...?

So here it is, silly me. It was on my tabletop all along!

Haha, I was worried for no reason.

Japanese Cryptic: The Controller

Translated from Japanese by Shishou(師匠)

Cryptic Story

"That's why I'm saying, I have the controller in my hands. I can control the radio-car with it. If I press the back button, the car moves backwards. If I press the forward button, it moves forwards.
The radio-car doesn't move on its own, I'm the one who's controlling it."

"I know that."

"In other words, if you look from the car's perspective, I'm the god!"

"Ehh...What if it stops moving according to the controller, according to you?"

"In that case...I'll crush it with my foot. I'm the god, didn't I tell you!"

"That's why I'm not following her stealthily. I'm intentionally giving away my presence to her.
She's was not scared, but now she's scared because of me.
She was at ease, but now I have made her face stiff.
She is looking behind again and again...so cute.
I'm controlling her, I'm the god who's controlling her! "

"What if she does a movement that was not according to your controller...?"

"Yeah...that's the reason, I've done this...I'm the god that's why!"

Translated from Japanese by Shishou(師匠)

Cryptic Story

There was a man who would travel across the national-border bridge everyday with a large bag over his shoulder.

Finding his actions suspicious, a policeman decided to investigate him. He asked him to show his bag, inside it the policeman found nothing but sand.

Still, the policeman suspected him so he would check upon him everyday.

Not once did he find anything other than sand in the man's bag.

Japanese Cryptic: Our Private Moment

Translated from Japanese by Shishou(師匠)

Cryptic Story

You jump up everyday in the air just to get a glance at my beautiful face.

But no matter how many times you desperately try, we never have our moment even for a single second.

Even then, you keep jumping up for hours.

People are watching, don't you mind them?

This is our secret.

What the hell! Why the hell does that woman sit on the second floor everyday!
