Japanese Urban Legend: The Taxi Driver

Translated from Japanese by Shishou(師匠)

Urban Legend

Backseat Ghost

This story was narrated to me by one of my friend, who said that the story was a real experience of his dad.

I don't want to disclose his dad's name, so I will use the pseudonym A to refer him.

A-san is an experienced Taxi-driver who has been in this businesses for about 35 years. He drives the taxi from morning till late night, always helping the passengers to reach their destination in minimum time.

It was a rainy night. A-san was a little depressed as he didn't get many passengers that day. While riding his taxi back to the garage, he passed a desolate road that went thorough a hilly area. He had used this road a couple of times, but today was the first time he was crossing it late at night in a rainy weather.

Japanese Cryptic: Bathroom

Translated from Japanese by Shishou(師匠)

Cryptic Story

Well, I should head out now.
I look at my watch to see that it's already late in the afternoon.
Oh! I haven't washed my face yet.
I know it's a pain but I have to do it.
I head to the bathroom, turn the tap on, and splash water on my face.
I take the face-cleanser on my fingers and apply it on my face.
I massage it on my face and splash some more water to produce a heavy lather.
I can hear the sound of water droplets going down the drain.
Ah! I've wasted a lot of water, I should wash my face quickly.

With my eyes closed, I search for the stream of water.
...Where is it? I can't find the tap...
I somehow open my eyes while withstanding the burning sensation of lather.
Tap...tap...where is it...?
Here it is...
I grab the tap and turn it on. The water starts flowing.
I quickly wash my face and dry it with towel.

I want to check my face in the mirror but I'm scared.
I quickly get out of the bathroom and run away from the house.

Japanese Ghost Story : Nana-Chan

Translated from Japanese by Shishou(師匠)

Ghost Story

I often used to spend my time alone during my childhood. My parents owned an ancient, run-down ancestral house in the outskirts of a village where there were no kids coeval with me. I did have my brother, but he was very little at that time so I didn't play much with him.
I would often feel lonely because my younger brother got all the attention of my parents and grandparents. Anyway, to cure my loneliness, I'd would explore the house everyday, which was pretty big with numerous rooms, and would find myself playing with various objects I found in the rooms.

In the south-west area of our house, we had a storage room that was cluttered with various tools and objects. I spent a lot of time in the room playing with the objects as if they were toys.

When did I find that mirror? I honestly don't remember much. I just know that it was already in a worn-out condition: no frame, no handle, just a circular reflective surface. Despite being an old mirror, it clearly reflected the surroundings without any fogginess.
A few days later, I was playing with the mirror, checking my face, when I saw the reflection of a girl in the mirror. Startled, I turned back to see this uninvited guest, but what I found was...nothing!
I understood that she could only be seen in the mirror. Of course, I found it a little creepy, but I wasn't scared of her. She was a long-haired, fair-skinned girl.

Japanese Cryptic: Where's my key?

Translated from Japanese by Shishou(師匠)

Cryptic Story

When I was returning home from work, I got hit with this sudden realization of not having the house-key with me.

Shit! I'm in serious trouble now.

What should I do...? It's already 2AM; the landlord must be fast asleep by now.

I don't even have a duplicate key....

Did I drop it somewhere...but I remember putting it in my wallet.

Don't tell me! Did my money...

...Thank god, my money is safe in my wallet.

It does seem like I dropped the key somewhere.

I really don't want to waste my money on hotel tonight...

...Tch, I'm going to ask for help from the landlord.

-Next Morning-

I really messed up yesterday. The landlord was enraged at me for disturbing his sleep.

Well, I'll have to get a new key now.

aa...huh...? What the...?

So here it is, silly me. It was on my tabletop all along!

Haha, I was worried for no reason.

Japanese Cryptic: The Controller

Translated from Japanese by Shishou(師匠)

Cryptic Story

"That's why I'm saying, I have the controller in my hands. I can control the radio-car with it. If I press the back button, the car moves backwards. If I press the forward button, it moves forwards.
The radio-car doesn't move on its own, I'm the one who's controlling it."

"I know that."

"In other words, if you look from the car's perspective, I'm the god!"

"Ehh...What if it stops moving according to the controller, according to you?"

"In that case...I'll crush it with my foot. I'm the god, didn't I tell you!"

"That's why I'm not following her stealthily. I'm intentionally giving away my presence to her.
She's was not scared, but now she's scared because of me.
She was at ease, but now I have made her face stiff.
She is looking behind again and again...so cute.
I'm controlling her, I'm the god who's controlling her! "

"What if she does a movement that was not according to your controller...?"

"Yeah...that's the reason, I've done this...I'm the god that's why!"

Japanese Cryptic: On the Bridge

Translated from Japanese by Shishou(師匠)

Cryptic Story

There was a man who would travel across the national-border bridge everyday with a large bag over his shoulder.

Finding his actions suspicious, a policeman decided to investigate him. He asked him to show his bag, inside it the policeman found nothing but sand.

Still, the policeman suspected him so he would check upon him everyday.

Not once did he find anything other than sand in the man's bag.

Japanese Cryptic: Our Private Moment

Translated from Japanese by Shishou(師匠)

Cryptic Story

You jump up everyday in the air just to get a glance at my beautiful face.

But no matter how many times you desperately try, we never have our moment even for a single second.

Even then, you keep jumping up for hours.

People are watching, don't you mind them?

This is our secret.

What the hell! Why the hell does that woman sit on the second floor everyday!

Japanese Horror: Abandoned Building

Translated from Japanese by Shishou(師匠)

Short Story

abandoned-building

This story took place when I was still an elementary school kid.

Our town had a 2-storied tall abandoned building which was in a pretty rundown condition. The window panes were shattered, walls had cracks---the entire building looked as if it was about to collapse. Due to this, the locals feared going near it.

One certain day, I, together with my friends, decided to go inside it as a test of courage*.
It was still afternoon time, so we decided to go up to the 2nd floor and investigate it.
On the 2nd floor we came across a door that had something written on it.

"I'm inside of this room."

We entered the room and progressed inside it. At the end of the room, the path divided into two: left and right. There was something written on the wall.

"Go left to find me."

So, we continued on the left path. Of course, we were already scared by this point, but we needed to know the person behind this. At the end of the path, we came across two rooms: one was on left, other was on right.

"My head in the left room. My body is in the right room." the wall read.

As soon as my friends read the inscription, they frantically ran away out of the building.
But I didn't want to give up after making this far. I mustered courage and entered the right room.

The wall at the end of the room read "My body is beneath this."

I looked down.

"My head has come for you from the left room. Don't look back."

Without wasting any second, I jumped out of the window.

Since then, I haven't been in vicinity of that building.

Japanese Cryptic: Layton vs Ace Attorney

Translated from Japanese by Shishou(師匠)

Cryptic Story

One certain day, I was introduced to a room by a guy.
The room had nothing inside it except a lonely 3DS in the middle.

The guy said,

"That 3DS has Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney installed on it. You can't exit the room until you clear the game. If you clear it, you'll be awarded with a 100 million Yen. What do you say? Want to participate in this challenge?"

I can earn that much money just by playing a game? That sounds too easy! I'm in.

I accepted his challenge and shut myself in the room. ------------------------------------------------------------------------

Japanese Cryptic: Foresight

Translated from Japanese by Shishou(師匠)

Cryptic Story

When I was in elementary school, I'd relentlessly bully a guy (let's call him A-kun) as he sucked at both studies and sports.

Things changed when we reached middle school. He started receiving perfect scores, which was quite ironic as he slept through all his classes.

During the school-event he took the role of event-manager and turned it into a huge success.

This erratic change in A-kun intrigued me, and therefore, I called him up for a questioning-session.

His answer to my questions was-

"Actually, I can see the future. I can see it in a very great detail."

When I told him I was envious of his ability, he replied,

"I don't need this power anymore. If you want, I can give it to you. Meet me on the day before our graduation."

"Woohoo!", I shouted. This was something I've always wanted. Power to peek the future? What else could you want more!

Days came and went, and came it the day when I'd receive my power from A-kun.

We both met at the promised spot. He told that a ceremony has to be performed in order to transfer the power. He covered both of my ears and then proceeded to recite some incantations in a low voice. This went on for a minute or two. Finally, he said it was over. He could no longer see the future after transferring the ability to me.

"Wooaah!! I can see it! I can see it!! I can see tomorrow's graduation ceremony.  I can see my high-school girlfriend, my university, my job in a first-class corporation, my wedding ceremony. It's amazing!"

But, I'm kind of regretting the 'present' moment.

Japanese Cryptic: Collision

Translated from Japanese by Shishou(師匠)

Cryptic Story

A guy, who had recently purchased a high-class car, was showing it off by driving at the full speed.
Unfortunately for him, he lost the control of the car and collided head-on with a vehicle from opposite side.

Seeing the extent of damage to his car, he shouted, "WHAT THE HELL DID YOU DO TO MY CAR, YOU IDIOT!"

He continued, "SHIT! I CAN'T EVEN FIND MY ROLEX WATCH."

Japanese Cryptic: Wrong recipient

Translated from Japanese by Shishou(師匠)

Cryptic Story

Nowadays, I'm living in my parents' house.

A few minutes ago, I messaged my girlfriend "Want to meet tonight?"
But when I checked the recipient , I realized the mistake: I had accidentally sent the message to my mother. LOL

A few moments later, I receive the reply "Sorry, A-san. I can't meet you tonight."

"Haha. Mom, you're making fun of me? LOL"

"Where are you now?" I receive another reply.

"In the house." I reply. Just then my cellphone starts ringing.

I hang it up. Again, it starts ringing. "She's really into it. LOL"

Gakkou no kaidan: From hell to heaven

Translated from Japanese by Shishou(師匠)

Translated from the DS game  Minna de Taikan Dokusho DS - Chou-Kowai! Gakkou no Kaidan

tv-dark-room

I'm called the master of video-games by my friends. Well, I'd say it's quite true as no one in my class can play better than me. Though, there are times when I lose. The one guy who is able to defeat me is Osamu-kun of the other class. He is known as the video-game emperor among his comrades. The total video-games he possesses outnumbers mine by a substantial quantity.

His friends say that he plays everyday till late night until his parents arrive from work. That's also the reason he keeps on sleeping during the classes and ultimately ends up with bad grades.

Truth to be told, I feel envious of Osamu-kun's life. My parents get angry at me if they find me playing during night. If my grades drop, they don't give me money to buy new games. "How great would it be if I could live Osamu-kun's life", I always think to myself. However, whenever I play against him, I feel as if instead of enjoying the game, he's playing for the sole purpose of winning. That's because his face takes a frightening expression during that time.

One day...

Japanese Cryptic: The aged cat

Translated from Japanese by Shishou(師匠)

Cryptic Story

Our family had a cat who had been a part of our family even before I was born.
As I grew up, the cat also aged with me and grew weaker and weaker .

Right from my childhood, I had health problems, so every now and then I'd get asthma attacks and had to be rushed to the hospital.

During my elementary school, I got severe asthma attack. I was hospitalized.

In the hospital room I saw a dream.

In that dream I saw my cat saying something to me.

"A-chan, are you in pain?"
"I'm going to a far away place, so I'll also take your pain with me."

When I opened up my eyes, I got news from my parents that our cat has passed away.

From that time I never got any attack and have never had any asthma problem.

It seems like my cat really took my pain away from me...

Japanese Cryptic: The cleaning duty

Translated from Japanese by Shishou(師匠)

Cryptic Story

That day, it was my turn to perform cleaning duty in the arts room at my school.
I wanted to get done with it quickly and leave for home. So, while performing the cleaning haphazardly, I came across a painting which looked very different from others, for it was decorated in a peculiar way as if it was a valuable thing.

That painting was a portrait of a very beautiful woman. Her eyes were a little strange, though.

She was staring right at me with her big pupils. This unsettled me and therefore, I returned home quickly after that.

The next day when I reached school, I saw a huge commotion going on. I seemed like the painting I had seen yesterday was stolen. Obviously, I was the last person to have witnessed it, so I got called up by the art teacher.

"Hmm...It was present when you were doing the cleaning, right?"

"Yes, no doubt about it. Umm...was it a very valuable painting?"

"It was created by a friend of mine. He called it 'The Sleeping Beauty'. It was the painting of his sleeping daughter. Not much valuable if you ask me. Also, both the artist and the daughter are no longer in this world."

"Is that so...?"

We never found the painting.
The strange thing is that we didn't even find any traces of the thief.

Japanese Cryptic: The old-man who lived in mountains

Translated from Japanese by Shishou(師匠)

Cryptic Story

There was a old-man who got so fed up with the humanity that he started living deep in the mountains.

The old-man had a grand-child called Jesse who would write him letters everyday to ease his mind.

Jesse continued to send him letters everyday. It went on for months until one day when the old-man didn't receive any letter. He kept on waiting but no letter came even after a week. The old-man was worried now.

He left the mountains and headed to the city to find about his grand-child. When he reached the grand-child's house, he came to know that his grandchild had been murdered by someone.

This saddened him; tears rolled out of his eyes. He vowed to catch the murderer.

"No, I think I already know...Only that guy could be the murderer..."

Japanese Cryptic: My conversation with my little sister

Translated from Japanese by Shishou(師匠)

Cryptic Story

My conversation with my little sister. Here A-kun refers to my friend.

Sister: "Can you call A-kun to our house?"

Me: "Huh? What do you want to do with A-kun?"

Sister: "Can you please do it?"

Me: "But why him?"

Sister: "Ummm...I just want to have some pictures with him."

Me: "Eh! wait, do you like him?"

Sister: "No, no. He isn't my type."

Me: "You aren't making any sense."

Sister: "You see...I've something to tell you."

Me: "Yes..."

Sister: "I had conversation with this girl at a seminar..."

Me: "Okay...?"

Sister: "And I bragged to her how good-looking my brother is."

Me: "Oh."

Sister: "Her picture..."

Me: "I'm sorry."

Sister: "It's...alright."

Japanese Cryptic: Can't contact my girlfriend

Translated from Japanese by Shishou(師匠)

Cryptic Story

I can't contact my girlfriend.

I can't connect to her cellphone number.

She has also been absent from her part-time work for many days.

Her house door is also locked as if she's away from home.

Could it be she got involved in some incident?

I'm worried.

I tried calling her cellphone numerous times, went to her workplace everyday, even frequented her house.

Everyday, everyday, it's the same thing.

Where did she disappear to?

Tomorrow, I'll force my way into her house. Maybe, I'll find some clues about her whereabouts.

Japanese Cryptic: Stalker's letters

Translated from Japanese by Shishou(師匠)

Cryptic Story

Since last week, I feel as if someone is stalking me.

When I return home from work, I always find a letter in my letter-box.

It's more like a scrap of paper rather than a letter as it has only one line written on it.

First day, " I welcome you home! " was written on it.

Second day, " I want to talk to you." was on it.

On the third day, it had " Not free?" and on fourth day it had, "Contact me please."

Fifth day it read, " Let's meet each other. " The messages got creepier day-by-day.

Sixth day it was, "Of course, you can't escape from me."

Seventh day it had, "See you tomorrow."

I got very frightened by it and contacted cops quickly.

But on the eighth day, another letter came. It read, "Excuse me for my idiocy. This is the last letter."

That was a very creepy experience. But now, I can be at ease .

Japanese Cryptic: Peep-hole

Translated from Japanese by Shishou(師匠)

Cryptic Story

"Ding-Dong"

My house-bell chimed. I headed to the entrance to see who was at the door.

For safety purposes, I peeped through the peep-hole on the door.

"Huh?..."

I could see an eye-ball staring at me from the other side of the door.

I was a little afraid, but I decided to open the door anyway as it was afternoon.

Slowly and slowly I opened up the door.

I was getting scared for no reason. A little kindergarten-girl was standing before me.

Japanese Cryptic: Earphones

Translated from Japanese by Shishou(師匠)

Cryptic Story

The earphones, which I purchased this morning for 9800 Yen, have gone dead.

Could it be because I was listening to them on maximum volume? Looks like it.

Damn it! They costed me 9800 Yen!

I got so much angry that I punched my 450000 Yen Plasma-TV.

When I calmed down, I checked it for damages.

The picture was okay, but the TV didn't output any sound.

Shit!

I even broke my TV. My 450000 Yen Plasma-TV!

At any rate, why the surroundings are so silent today?

I should use this opportunity and go out for a walk.

Japanese Urban Legend: The woman in the gaps

Translated from Japanese by Shishou(師匠)

Urban Legend

This incident happened with a student (let's call him A) who had moved to Tokyo to attend a University.

It all started one fateful day.

A was resting on bed, trying to release the stress that had accumulated in his body after attending lectures all day long, when suddenly his cellphone started ringing.

"Hello."

The person on the other side was his friend from High-School. He was calling him in-order to have him for a sleepover that night.

Initially, A tried to decline his offer, but seeing how persistent the friend was, he reluctantly agreed.

The friend's apartment, which was in the Suginami ward, was 10-minute walk from A's house.

When A reached his friend's apartment, he got surprised with the bizarre scene that was in front of him.

Every crevice in his house was covered with a packing-tape.

Japanese Cryptic: Oranges

Translated from Japanese by Shishou(師匠)

Cryptic Story

During the month of December, the weather got very chilly just like the last time, so I decided to set-up a kotatsu* in my room.

Next, I went out and bought some oranges to enjoy with kotatsu's heat.

I put the oranges on the top of kotatsu.

As I was about to pick up the orange to eat, I heard a faint noise from behind.

It sounded like as if some object had fallen on the ground from a height. I decided to check it out.

I went to the next room and found a book lying on the floor. Indeed a book had fallen from the shelf.

I put it back and returned to the kotatsu room.

I picked up the orange and ate it.

Japanese Cryptic: The dazzling gold

Translated from Japanese by Shishou(師匠)

Cryptic Story

Last night I had a dream.

I was on a vacant-land and was digging up a hole in the ground with my shovel.
After much digging, I hit a black surface and the radiance from it engulfed the entire vicinity.

No doubt! I definitely hit upon a pile of gold.

So, using my dream as a guide, I reach the vacant-land that I had seen in my dream last night.
I start digging up a hole.

What should I do when I become rich? Help my parents? Party with friends?
I think of various things I might do after finding the gold.

A while later, my shovel hits something.

This is it! I dig a little more in order to take it out...That instant............I see a white flash...

Japanese Ghost Story : The manga-club's guest

Translated from Japanese by Shishou(師匠)

Ghost Story

This incident happened while I was still in high-school.

I, together with other girls, had formed a manga club where we would gather and talk about our favorite manga and do doodling in our notebooks. Our club supervisor was also our social-studies teacher, so he had provided us the space for our club in social-studies room. We gathered there after-school and enjoyed a lot.

Once in a while, a few girls from other clubs also paid a visit and had fun together with us.

That day too, I, the club-president, was on my way to open the room-door. When I reached the club-room, I saw my friend, S-chan, standing in-front of the room with a pale face.

S-chan was that type of person who would never visit the manga-club even when invited a dozen of times. So, I found it strange that she was here to visit the club. I inquired, "What's the matter? It's rare to see you visiting the club."
"You should not enter this room today!" she blurted out.

Japanese Cryptic: Did you say something?

Translated from Japanese by Shishou(師匠)

Cryptic Story

My friend turned up at my house at night.

He was in a strange condition.

His eyes looked empty, and he was holding a knife in his hand.

He looked dazed and was murmuring something.

"Sorry...Sorry..."

"What, What happened?"

"Money, I want money."

"Hey! Calm down."

"If, I kill my friend for money, would god forgive me? Tell me!"

"Are you out of your mind? No matter what's your reason is, god never forgive a murderer. "

"...Yeah, I understand. That's how it. Definitely, that's how it is."

"Yes. If you kill someone for money, you won't be able to live a happy life."

"Thanks for giving me the courage. I'll try."

"Finally, you understood. Thank god."

"God..thanks. Thanks for giving me the courage to step in the right direction."

"If you want I can help you. First, tell me what happened?"

I asked him that while tapping his shoulder.

My friend, taken aback by my gesture, looked at me with a puzzled face, and said:

"...Did you say something?"

Japanese Ghost Story : My daughter's birthday

Translated from Japanese by Shishou(師匠)

Ghost Story

That day was my daughter's birthday so a lot of her friends had gathered for the birthday party.
But her best friend was nowhere to be seen. My daughter insisted that we start the party only when her best friend comes.

We continued to wait for a long time, but the friend didn't turn up. I persuaded my daughter to start the party as we couldn't wait forever. Moreover, the other friends had started getting bored of waiting.

So, the party started...

At the beginning, my daughter was not happy with me for making her start the party without her best friend, but as the party continued on, she started enjoying it together with her friends.

We did a lot of fun things in the party: chit-chatted, played bingo, ate cake. And  in such a way, the party came to an end.

After all, her best friend didn't arrive. When she realized it, she grew a little sad.

After the party, I was cleaning up the room. In the midst of it, I saw my daughter running up the stairs and going up into her room. She looked happy.

Strangely, I could her talking to someone else inside that room. "How is that possible?" I wondered.

I got worried and went to her room.

She was all alone! I check every corner but no one else was there.

I asked her, "With whom were you talking?" She replied, "The friend who didn't came to the party."

"I can't see. Where is your friend right now?", I asked her. She pointed under the bed.

I looked under the bed...

Her friend was there...

But the friends' face was completely crushed and blood was gushing out of the body.
I couldn't hold my self and screamed at the top of my lungs.

I came to know after that. That day, her friend was on the way to the party but got involved into an accident and passed away.

That friend didn't break the promise after all...even after death.

Japanese Cryptic: The doorbell

Translated from Japanese by Shishou(師匠)

Cryptic Story

Recently, someone has been playing doorbell-prank on me.

There it occurs again! That person is back to prank me.

But I can't do anything as I'm scared.

...The bell has been pressed 8...no, 9-times, today. Ah, it stopped.

Why does the person rings the bell for different number of times everyday?

I remember, they rang it 5-times yesterday. Before that it happened for 1-time.

Before that they rang it 4-times, and even before that day, it happened 1 or 2-times...

I don't quite remember the ringing frequency before that but I believe it was the first day.

Tomorrow, how many times are they going to ring it?

For how long is this going to continue?

Japanese Urban Legend: Kokkuri-san's voice

Translated from Japanese by Shishou(師匠)

Urban Legend

kokkuri-san-fox-mask-image
Kokkuri-san is coming for you

The game "Kokkuri-san"* was quite popular when I was in elementary school.

I had always wanted to try it but never got the opportunity. That's because during school time we would get yelled at by the teachers if found playing the game. At home too, I couldn't play it as my parents didn't allow it.

A certain day I got the perfect chance to play it together with my friends as my parents were away that day.

My house has a Japanese-styled room adjacent to a Buddhist altar room. We decided to play the game in that Japanese-styled room. After doing all the preparations, we all sat in a circular formation.
We started asking various questions and kokkuri-san answered all of them. Some answers delighted us, other worried us.

I was enjoying this fortune-telling game very much.

While the game was going on, I started getting curious about kokkuri-san. I thought, "Kokkuri-san is a fox but then how can it understand human language? Maybe it can also speak human language!"

Japanese Cryptic: The match girl

Translated from Japanese by Shishou(師匠)

Cryptic Story

It was a very chilly night.

A girl was in the town trying to sell matches.

"My dad told me: if I don't sell the matches, I can't return home."

She was trying to sell the matches desperately, but sadly nobody seemed to be interested in her.

Unable to bear the sheer-cold, she took out one match an lit it on fire.

A Christmas tree and a goose could be seen in the flame.

She kept on staring at the magnificent view in the flame until it went out.

Once again she lit the match. This time, her late grandma appeared in the flame.

She thought of ways that would prolong the fire so that she could see her grandma for a little longer.

She came up with the best idea. Her idea allowed her to stay with her grandma for the whole night.

The next day, 2 corpses were discovered.

Japanese Cryptic: Department store's roof

Translated from Japanese by Shishou(師匠)

Cryptic Story

I was on the roof of a department store, enjoying the scenic beauty that the surroundings had to offer.

I started feeling hungry. The restaurant was on the 4th floor, so I pressed the button to call the elevator.

While waiting for the elevator I thought about what I should eat.

Elevator came and the door opened, but I couldn't get inside it as it was full with people.

Left without any other option, I took the emergency staircase to reach the restaurant.

The omelet-rice sure was delicious!

Japanese Cryptic: Arc Welding

Translated from Japanese by Shishou(師匠)

Cryptic Story

At a certain high-school, an arc welding experiment was being carried out.
In arc welding, the metal is heated to about 3000 degree Celsius during the welding process.
Therefore, the welding room gets extremely hot during the process.

So, when the experiment was being carried out, a student, who couldn't bear the heat anymore, decided to remove his protection-glasses to wipe the sweat on his eyebrows.

At that instant he saw the welding sparks with his naked eye...

At the end of classes, he returned to his house. He had a bad eyesight so he always wore contact lenses during the school time and removed them after returning home.

That day too, he returned home and tried removing his contact lenses.

Everything started getting darker...

His vision got engulfed by darkness and in a few moments he couldn't see anything.

That was the day he lost his eyesight.

Japanese Ghost Story : The creepy dancing girl

Translated from Japanese by Shishou(師匠)

Ghost Story

The incident which I'm about to narrate happened when I was still an elementary-school kid.

That day, I and my father had decided to visit the nearest DIY store to purchase some goods.
It was around 6 in the evening, and I remember it was somewhat of a chilly evening.

There were some apartment complexes on the other side of the store and in-between these complexes existed a narrow path.

That was the place where I saw that thing.

I was sitting in the car with my dad, talking about what we'd buy from the store.

"Dad, Dad,  What we'll buy?"
"Some timber and a saw."

"I hear some clattering sound from there. Can we go and see it?"
"O-- Okay..."

I don't know why I asked for such a foolish thing.
The next moment I realized, we were parked in front of that narrow path.

"Wh-----?!!"
"What happened?"

There was a girl in font of us who was dancing in an eerily manner. She was wearing short-sleeves, miniskirt and sandals.

It didn't take me long to realize that she wasn't human.

Moreover, I could see her clearly even though there was no street light present. It seemed like she was emitting light from her own body. Also, I found that the area around her was much chillier.
I got very scared and hid inside the car.

Dad asked me "what happened?" with a face that made me realize that he couldn't see any of it.
I shouted "A creepy girl is dancing over there!", but of course he didn't believe my words.

We passed that path again while returning from the store, but this time there was nobody there.

Fifteen years have passed since that incident. I still come across that path once in a while but I haven't seen that girl again since that incident.

What was that thing? A person?
Why was she dancing like that? These are the few question that still puzzle me to this day.

Japanese Cryptic: I'm hungry

Translated from Japanese by Shishou(師匠)

Cryptic Story

A king of a certain country was on a voyage with his fellow soldiers. One day, a violent storm conjured up that swallowed whole of his ship along with the crew members.  Only the king and one of his soldiers survived. They both got washed ashore on a deserted island.

King: "I'm starving. Bring me something to eat. If you do that, I'll promote you to a higher rank."

Soldier: "Really? I'm going right away!"

The soldier brought the food and fed the king.

King: "I'm hungry. Bring me food and I'll promote you to a much higher rank."

Soldier: "Understood!"

The soldier handed over the food-stuff to the king.

King: "Bring me food. I'll promote you to an earl rank. "

Soldier: "That would be great!"

The soldier immediately handed over the food to the king.

King: "If you bring me food, I'll make you a duke."

Soldier: "Okay!"

The soldier gave the food to the king.

King: "I'm starving."

Soldier: "I'm very sorry but I can't bring the food anymore."

King: "Don't worry. This time I'll do it myself."

Japanese Ghost Story : Sorry...Sorry...

Translated from Japanese by Shishou(師匠)

Ghost Story

My parents passed away when I was 12 years old.  Consequently, I and my brother, who is 3 years younger than me, we both were sent to live with our relatives. We ended up living with different relatives, though.

Things were somewhat okay during the first month; I managed to get by. Time passed and I started realizing that the my relatives have been considering me nothing more than a bother. I could sense that they were growing cold towards me day by day. Therefore, I dropped out of high-school, started working in a factory, and then moved out of my relatives' house.

When I turned 17, my brother moved in, and we both started living together.

I wanted my brother to live a normal life, so I worked very hard to get him into a high-school. I worked in the factory during the daytime, and I worked as a hostess during the night.

Japanese Horror: Drawers

Translated from Japanese by Shishou(師匠)

Short Story

One day, A-kun was passing by a recycle shop when he came across a desk with a lot of large-sized drawers. The desk garnered his attention as it looked high-class despite being quite cheap.

He inquired about the price to the shopkeeper. According to him, he had purchased it from the parents of a deceased person, hence the cheap price. Moreover, there is one drawer that is locked shut and can't be opened by any means.

A-kun ended up buying it considering it a value for money.

When he was moving it within his room, he noticed a faint sound coming from the locked drawer; but he didn't pay it much attention.

Japanese Ghost Story : Precognition

Translated from Japanese by Shishou(師匠)

Ghost Story

silent hill-foggy-intersection-creepy-traffic light

This incident happened with my mother when she was still a school student. During those days, she used to live with her grandfather.

Now, I should mention that my mother had experienced paranormal stuff quite a lot of time in her childhood days. Sometimes when she visited the graves, she felt that somebody pulled her. Other times, she experienced things like pulling of hair, weight on her chest etc.

My mother had a habit of running in the morning. Getting up 4 in the morning and then running for about 5 KMs was a daily routine for her.

One day, she woke up like always to go for running, but she found that it was raining outside. She thought about the situation for a minute and then decided to follow her routine and go for the running.

Japanese Cryptic: The old man who sits in front of me

Translated from Japanese by Shishou(師匠)

Cryptic Story

There is an old man who always sits in front of me in the train when I return home from work.
For some reason, he looks at me and grins.

He does this everyday and it has started creeping me out. So, one day I asked my co-worker to go home together with me. We both boarded the train together.

But even then, the old man looked and grinned at me. I got really creeped out by him, so when
we (my friend and I) both got off the train, I asked him, "Wasn't that old man creepy?"

My friend replied back with this.

"The old man who was looking at you?"
"Actually, that person was not looking at you. He was looking and grinning at the ghost behind you."

I think it was just a poor joke by my friend, but I get a bad feeling for some reason.

Japanese Horror: The phone call

Translated from Japanese by Shishou(師匠)

Creepy Person

cellphone-creepy-japanese-person

There was a high school freshman girl who used to live in a pretty rural area. Her parents bought her a cellphone as a birthday present for her.

She was overjoyed by it. But the problem was that cellphones were not widespread during those days, so she couldn't use it to call her neighboring friends.

However, one day, she received a text message on her cellphone.
It read.
"I want a penpal, so I entered random number and sent it. If it's okay with you, would you like to be my penpal?"

That sudden message delighted her and she soon sent an affirmative reply.

From that day on, she started messaging that person on a daily basis. She learned a few things about that person.

That person was a guy and a sophomore at high school. She grew more attracted to him when she found that he was nearly the same age as her.

However, that guy mostly talked about TV shows or school. Never once did he talk about the place where he lived. Whenever asked, he refused to talk about that.

One day, the girl made up her mind and sent this message to the guy.
"I want to hear your voice. I want to talk about various things directly."

Japanese Cryptic: Reunion and toast

Translated from Japanese by Shishou(師匠)

Cryptic Story

I was at a reunion party with my old friends.

I picked up a glass of beer and held it up for a toast. I drank it completely.

*pant* I can't breath.

Don't tell me. Did they poison my drink? Before losing my consciousness completely, I glanced at my friend.

He was trembling and had a confused look on his face.

Japanese Cryptic: The toilet

Translated from Japanese by Shishou(師匠)

Cryptic Story

A school staff-member went to toilet at night.

He switched on the lights and went to the innermost stall.

After a while, he heard flushing sound from the neighboring stall. Then he could hear footsteps going away from that stall.

He didn't care if it was being used by someone or not.

He returned to the staff room and told about it to the other members. Hearing it, the faces of all the members turned pale.

They all asked "But why?"

Japanese Cryptic: Empty house

Translated from Japanese by Shishou(師匠)

Cryptic Story

Today, I made 2 big mistakes.

First, I forgot to lock the front door of my house. I realized it only after reaching the office. Well, I was already running late for office, so I might have missed it in hastiness. It's not much of a concern as my house has only a single room and even the bathroom is without a bathtub. There isn't anything worth stealing.

The second mistake was a serious one though. I forgot my cellphone at home. I think I left it when I was in the toilet typing some mails on it. Being a salesman, I cannot do my job properly without my cellphone.  Worst of all, I got severely yelled at by my boss.

I seriously hope I don't experience such a horrible day again.

But there's more to it. When I reached my house, I encountered something worse. I unlocked and opened up the front door, went inside, and found the whole room in a mess.

It looked like somebody broke into my house while I was at work. The window was not open, so it seems that the thief entered through the front door.

But god did show me some mercy as nothing was stolen. The only bad thing is that I'll have to tidy up the room. LOL

Now, I remember. I've got to find my phone. If I forget it again tomorrow, I might fired by the boss. LOL.
You people too, remember to lock your houses before going anywhere.

Japanese Cryptic: Incompetent Police

Translated from Japanese by Shishou(師匠)

Cryptic Story

What the hell are cops doing nowadays?

They feed on our taxes but don't do the job they get paid for. They are nothing but parasites.

Last week, a murder incident happened near my workplace.

I heard that someone murdered a woman by stabbing her with ice pick.

The incident was the hot topic all over the town.

It was all over in the headlines in various media as it was such a rare incident in a small town.
It's understandable but I think they were just adding fuel to the fire.

My grandmother was quite worried by it that she spent a lot of hours in front of the altar, praying to Buddha.

Despite this, the cops were unable to ascertain the identity of the lethal weapon used in the murder.
I can't believe our cops are this incompetent.

Japanese Cryptic: April fool

Translated from Japanese by Shishou(師匠)

Cryptic Story

Today is April 1st. Nothing significant happened other than the phone call from my friend.

The phone call went on like this.

Friend: "Yo! Long time no see."

Me: " Yeah. How you doing?"
...

After that this talk took place.

Friend: "Ah, I remembered. You know what day is today?"

Me: " Hmm... April fool?"

Friend: "Yup. Correct. But this is not related to April fool. *giggles*
Tomorrow, I'm going to kill you!"

Me: "Huh? Dark jokes aren't funny, even if it's April fool."

Friend: "Haha, I'm sorry. I was just lying."

Me: "Hey, hey..."

And after talking for a while we hung up.

Today is April 2nd.

I wonder why he said those words.

I remember he said "I'm just lying". Maybe he meant something else.

Japanese Cryptic: I'm very sorry

Translated from Japanese by Shishou(師匠)

Cryptic Story

Friend: "I'm very sorry."

Me: "Hey, I told you to stop it."

Friend: "My sister...she's hospitalized...I need money."

Me: "Are you okay? Hold yourself together."

Friend: "...Thanks..."

Me: "I...I could lend you one hundred thousand Yen if you like."

Friend: "Thank you very much. Umm..how should I say it..."

Me: "Don't worry. I have some dinner still left. Come on, have a meal."

Friend: "Thank you."

Me: "What are you saying. We are close friends, aren't we?"

Friend: "I was thinking of suicide...If you weren't there for me, I would have already..."

Me: "Hey, don't even think about it."

Friend: "Sorry for disturbing you at such a late hour."

Japanese Ghost Story : The man in reflection

Translated from Japanese by Shishou(師匠)

Ghost Story

japanese-creepy-train-window-glass
The incident that I'm about to narrate happened when I was still an elementary school student.

During those days, I regularly used trains to travel to travel to and back from the school.
One way trip took up to 30 minutes. So, naturally, I found myself drowning in boredom during the journey.

Usually, I, my sister, and my friend---3 of us---would travel together to the school. But there were times when they were involved in club activities, and I traveled all alone back from school.

So during such a time, when I was traveling alone back from school, I came across this creepy incident.

The outside of the train was completely dark because of the winter season.
I was mindlessly gazing at the dark landscape through the window.

Just like always, I was in the first car of the train and was gazing outside at the dark scenery.
A while later, I came up with this funny game to kill the time. It was "choose a particular person being reflected in the glass, then turn back and find that person inside the train."

I immediately started picking people with peculiar features and searched for them inside the train.
It was a simple game but I was enjoying it.

After a while of playing, I saw a tall guy with glasses. He was taller than everyone on the train and this particular feature made him stood out from the other people. I wondered why I didn't notice such a characteristic person sooner.

"He might have boarded the train at the last station", I thought.
I turned back to search for that person, but much to my surprise, I couldn't find him anywhere among the crowd. Such a tall person should be easily findable in the crowd, right? That's why I turned again and again to search for that person. But he wasn't there. He even stopped reflecting in the window glass after some time.

At first I thought it could be my imagination.
But now, I think I certainly saw a man who was only visible in the glass, and maybe he wasn't present inside the train.

Japanese Cryptic: Library

Translated from Japanese by Shishou(師匠)

Cryptic Story

I went to borrow a book at the library.

I saw a book-rack along the wall that had all the featured novels lined up.

I picked up a novel with interesting title and turned the pages to see if it was interesting.

I glanced back at the rack and saw someone looking at me from the other side of the rack.
