Japanese Horror: The Late-Night Telephone

Translated from Japanese by Shishou(師匠)

Short Story

You guys remember the Tokyo-earthquake that happened some time ago? This incident took place at the same time.

It was the midnight hour, and, I, like any sane person, was sleeping soundly on my bed. Unfortunately, my sleep was soon taken away from me by the telephone's frantic ringing.

*Brrrringgg*
*Brrrringgg*
*Brrrringgg*
*Brrrringgg*

Who the hell is calling me at this hour? I hope it's not the news of some relative's death. Maybe, it's a call from some sales-company trying to scam people off at the late hour.

Anyway, I need to pick it up.

"Hello...?"

"Ah--Did I wake you up? I did!"

That was the voice of my friend who lived nearby.

"Don't 'Wake you up' me, you idiot-kun! What do you need at this hour?" the annoyance was audible in my tone.

At the very moment, the ground started shaking side-ways violently--the sign of an imminent earthquake.

"What the...? Earthquake...Is your run-down shabby house gonna be okay? Lol" I jested.

However, there was no reply from his side. Maybe, he just hung up.

I retreated back to my room to sleep once again. I opened the door to my bedroom.

The scene that I witnessed in that room was not something I was expecting. A few magazine and two dumbbells had fallen from the book-shelf right onto my bed. Had I been sleeping on the bed, I would have been squashed by those things.

I put those things aside and went to sleep.

The next day, I went to my friend's house to apologize to him. The friend, however, had no recollection of ever calling me yesterday's night.

Strange, isn't it.

Japanese Cryptic: Escape From The Killer

Translated from Japanese by Shishou(師匠)

Cryptic Story

I was chit-chatting with my friend while having the lunch.

Friend: "Do you know about a game where you get paid money if  you escape from the killer?"

I: "Huh? You can't be serious. (lol)"

Friend: "It's very real. In fact, I did participate in a game."

I thought he was jesting, but his face looked serious.

I: "Heh? If you really did participate, then what was the end result?"

Friend: "Me? There were 3 people."

Japanese Cryptic: The day he was born

Translated from Japanese by Shishou(師匠)

Cryptic Story

The day he was born into that world...

On that day, I gifted him flowers.

Would he be happy?

He smiled and hugged me.

I was born a day after his birthday.

Japanese Cryptic: Magic

Translated from Japanese by Shishou(師匠)

Cryptic Story

A girl called Madoka-chan lived in a certain village. She had a stalker called Kyubey, who would pressurize her to establish a contract with him.

She was so much scared of this stalker that she started seeing him in her dreams. At this point, Madoka-chan couldn't bear it anymore. She shouted, "Drop dead!"

The very next day, a dismembered body of Kyubey was discovered in the outskirts of the village.

Madoka-chan thought that this was her deed, and she could kill anyone in her dreams. She told the villagers that she can use magic to kill anyone in her dreams.

"Mami-chan, you have appeared in my dreams. You will die."
Next day, a headless body of Mami-chan was found.

"Sayaka-chan, you too, will die."
Next day, Sayaka-chan fell off the bridge.

"Anko-chan, you too, will die."
Anko-chan died in an explosion the next day.

"Papa, you too, will die."
Next day, papa hanged himself.

"Homura-chan, you too, will die."
However, Homura-chan didn't die.
Even after a few days, she didn't die.

Madoka-chan couldn't obliterate people in her dreams after that. Villagers thought Madoka was a swindler, so they banished her from the village.

"This is strange!!" Madoka murmured.

Madoka-chan had lost her magical ability.

Japanese Cryptic: Foresight

 Translated from Japanese by Shishou(師匠)

Cryptic Story

My name is Yumi.

I have the power to see the future.

I see my test paper before the exam, so I easily score 100 on all tests.

Oh, there's a problem!

When I used my power in my house, I saw a burglar with a knife.

Fufufufu~

I'm not scared! I'll use my power to find a suitable hiding spot.

Eh?!

...That's strange. Why is everything so dark?

...I see. I must have hidden in the basement.

That's a child's play.

I feel safe now.

Next day, Yumi-chan was found dead.

Japanese Horror: My Sister's Ghost

Translated from Japanese by Shishou(師匠)

Ghost Story

This incident took place when I was still in the middle-school. It was during the school-excursion I met a young lady who was our advisor for the trip. I should tell you that I've always been an occult fanatic, so this time too I, after having some immaterial conversation with her, ended up steering the conversation into the domain of occult.

"Sensei, have you ever experienced something unearthly?"

Judging by her expression, she seemed like she was one of those "psychics*".
She collected her thoughts for some time and began articulating her thoughts.

Six-years ago, Sensei started noticing strange things in her house. Though, she didn't pay much heed to the spirit in the beginning. Rather than being scared of it, she was indifferent to the spirit's existence.

The spirit was a middle-school girl. Sometimes, she would be seen standing in the corridor, other times she was sitting on the stairs and looking down at the Sensei.

Needless to say, Sensei got a little scared after seeing her so many times. When she couldn't bear it anymore, she decided to ask her mother about it. The mother, though initially ambivalent, decided to tell Sensei the truth.

"The guy who planned this building had a daughter, who'd often come to see her dad working during the construction of this building. Unfortunately, a construction-accident killed her while she was near the staircase."

Many times we contemplated contacting the planner-guy to ask about this, but we never got a hold of him.

When she was finished with her story, I felt nothing but empty feeling in my heart. It was not because I was scared but because of a certain thought. The thought that the girl Sensei was talking about could be my very own sister who died 6-years ago in the same way. The planner-guy they couldn't contact was most probably my own father who committed suicide 5-years ago.

Probably, the thing that astounded me the most was that my sister hadn't still entered nirvana**.

I explained it all to my Sensei and asked if I could go and meet my sister.

The next day, I reached the Sensei's house. Sensei took me to the place where the ghost was frequently seen. The room didn't have much light and was already dimly lit like twilight.

"My sister has been living all alone in such a place for so long! I feel disgusted with myself." Such thoughts echoed in my brain.

Sensei left the place to give me some alone time.

Despite the intense emotions that had rendered me speechless, I collected my thoughts and began speaking.

"Sorry for making you live in this place all alone for such a long time."
"Sorry for not noticing your pain."
"I've come for you now. Let's return home together."

Tears started dripping down my eyes in the midst of my monologue.

What must be my sister thinking of me? I made such a kind sister suffer for so long in solitude.

A few moments later, I felt a someone's pat on my shoulder.

I turned around.

A completely unknown girl was standing there---her face eliciting nothing but dread.
A wicked smile appeared on her face as she whispered.

"You'll take me with you?"
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
*Psychics: Here psychics means someone who can see ghosts.
**Nirvana: Going to heaven.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Alright! How you doing guys? Sorry, for the delay in post. I was contemplating posting new cryptics but never got the time. Hopefully, I'll be regular from now on.

Japanese Cryptic: Late Night Strolling

Translated from Japanese by Shishou(師匠)

Cryptic Story

I love taking a stroll at night.

Today too I'm enjoying my late-night walk.

The street is engulfed by darkness, making it impossible to see the surroundings. However, I'm not worried as I have gotten used to this road.

I look up. I see a woman peeking at me from the window. I cannot make out her face due to the back-light of the room.

I waved my hand at her. She waved back.

I got a little excited and started walking quickly.

When I reached near her house, I looked up at her window one more time.

She was no longer there. I walked away disappointedly.

Japanese Cryptic: Strange Occurrences

  Translated from Japanese by Shishou(師匠)

Cryptic Story

I've been experiencing odd things in my house lately.
Whenever I return to my house, I feel like the things have moved from their original position.

When I consulted my friend about it, he told me it was most probably my imagination.

I've installed a few security cameras in my house just to be sure.
I regularly check the footage to see if something is really wrong. Honestly, I haven't seen anything odd in the footage.

But I can't be at ease just because of that. I need to check each and every hiding spot in the house.

I check the closet.
...No one's here.

I check drawers, bathroom, bathtub.
...No one's here.

I check the mirror.
...Still, can't see anyone.

I then decided to check the attic.
...Still no one.

After all, it was just my imagination...It sucks I spent so much money on security cameras.

I lived in the house for few more years but nothing really happened.

Japanese Cryptic: Bullying My Wife

 Translated from Japanese by Shishou(師匠)

Cryptic Story

My mother has been bullying my wife really bad. I've even stopped having meal on the same table as her.
Today, she abruptly came barging into our room while shouting "Clean the room!!", and she threw my wife in the closet!

I just couldn't take anymore of this cruelty and shouted "WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING TO MY AZUSA?"

"Azusa...Who's that?" my mother replied.

Oh! So, she doesn't even remember my wife's name...that's so cruel. I was so amazed by her insensitive remark that I couldn't utter anything.

Japanese Cryptic: The Shift

Translated from Japanese by Shishou(師匠)

Cryptic Story

Recently, I started working at a coffee shop, and I have to say a guest there is quite beautiful.
I've been trying my best to provide her a good service.

One day she asked me, "Can you tell me your shift?"

Wow! Does she want to come to the shop only during my shifts? I was overjoyed.
I told her my shift timings for the whole month.

But, I haven't been able to meet her after that day.
I'm kinda worried about her. I hope she didn't meet some accident or sickness.

Japanese Cryptic: Test Of Courage

Translated from Japanese by Shishou(師匠)

Cryptic Story

Six people were doing test-of-courage at an abandoned school.

One after the other, they headed inside the building. But no one returned.

At the end, only 2 people remained.

"I'll head inside. If I don't return in 15 minutes, call the cops."

But he didn't return even after 15 minutes, so the remaining guy called the cops.

The cops searched the whole building.

They found all 5 of them in a single toilet stall--all hanged by their necks.

Japanese Cryptic: Forever Together

Translated from Japanese by Shishou(師匠)

Cryptic Story

Woman: "With this, we'll stay together eternally."

Man: "Yeah, probably..."

Woman: "Huh? What do you mean? Explain!!"

Man: "Ah! We are about to land."

So, I was contemplating whether to translate it or not due to it's short length. I found the cryptic part to be okay, so here it is.

Japanese Cryptic: The Shriek

Translated from Japanese by Shishou(師匠)

Cryptic Story

After taking a shower, I submerged my body in the bathtub to get relief from the stress that had accumulated in my body since the morning. Just after a few moments in the bathtub, I heard a loud shriek that filled up the whole bathroom.

I looked around the bathroom to find the source of the voice. No one was there.

Could it be an intruder? I wrapped a towel around my waist and started looking around the house for anything suspicious. Nothing...no signs of any intruder!

I returned to the bathroom to investigate it once more.
Don't tell me the intruder is hiding inside this? I looked at the lid of the bathtub.
I removed the lid...still nothing!

So, it was just my imagination, I guess.

Tomorrow is a day off. I think I will spend some more time in the bathtub.

Japanese Cryptic: The Creepy Mirror

Translated from Japanese by Shishou(師匠)

Cryptic Story

A certain middle-school had a huge mirror on the landing of the staircase.
It was rumored that anyone who stood in front of that mirror at 4:44 ended up dead.

One day, 3 girls of the arts-club were all alone in the art room after school, finishing up their art works. As the clock approached 4:44, they jokingly decided to pay the mirror a visit.

Though, they didn't look in the mirror when they reached there. They decided that the loser of the rock-paper-scissor game would have to test the urban legend.

So, the loser girl went there and stood in front of the mirror exactly at 4:44.

...Nothing happened.

The 3 of them laughed at the rumor and decided to return to the arts-club room.

...It was now 7:00

The girls decided to head to their homes. The girl, who had tested the rumor, wanted to remain for a little more time to finish up her work.

"You two go ahead. I'll stay here for a little longer."

So, she stayed there alone, trying to finish her work.

After finishing the work, she headed out of the art room, and towards the mirror.

The clock was pointing to 7:16

She looked in the mirror.

Then...

A pair of hands came out of the mirror and pulled her inside.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Japanese people sure love their mirrors.

Japanese Cryptic: Unexplored Paradise

Translated from Japanese by Shishou(師匠)

Cryptic Story

I am a freelance writer. To get inspiration for my next article, I've come to a certain place in Africa.
The theme of my next article is "Unexplored Paradise".

The native people, using their broken Japanese, invited me to their village that was deep in the mountains.

When I reached the village, I was greeted by a lot of skinny natives.
They looked very happy. Could it be that it was rare for them to meet a Japanese, or are they this cheerful always? I don't know, but I was kinda embarrassed.

After meeting with the village elder, I was led to a small hut.

Inside the hut, they had prepared a bathtub for me.

I seriously needed this after such a long journey. I'm honestly grateful to these people.

One native told me using his broken Japanese, "You take a bath, we have a grand feast."

Wow! They have a party for me after the bath. That's nice!

I jumped into the bathtub that had medicinal-leaves floating on the water.

Japanese Cryptic: The Ghost With Knife

Translated from Japanese by Shishou(師匠)

Cryptic Story

He has the special ability to see ghosts.

Battlefields and murder-sites--He can see ghosts for sure at such locations.

He says that the ghosts have bloodshot eyes and are quite resentful towards humans.

Today, he went to a building for his work. Normally, he works from his company's office, but today he was on a business trip.

He sensed something odd as soon as he entered the building. He realized that the building had been the site of a murder incident.

He became melancholic by realizing that. The ability to see ghosts is not as exciting as it is portrayed.

He completed his work quickly and headed out the room to avoid encountering the ghost.

His attempt turned into a failure when he encountered the ghost of a man standing in the corridor.
The man's eyes were wide open, and he was holding a knife in his hand. His mouth and the knife, both were dyed red with blood.

This was the creepiest encounter till now.

He didn't want to get involved with the ghost, so he pushed it aside.

He got suprised that he could touch this ghost.

The ghost raised the knife over his head.

Japanese Cryptic: Chitchatting Through The Window

Translated from Japanese by Shishou(師匠)

Cryptic Story

Old woman: "You still there?"

I: "Yes, I haven't gone anywhere."

Old woman: "Eh...? Sorry, I couldn't hear you."

She was standing on the other side of the window, outside the house. I was inside the house, and that could be the reason why she wasn't able to hear me properly.

I: "It has started raining~"

I hurried to the veranda and quickly secured the laundry that I had put earlier to dry.

After that, I decided to warn my neighbors, who live in apartment 603, about the rain.

Japanese Urban Legend: Kuchisake Onna

Translated from Japanese by Shishou(師匠)

Urban Legend

Kuchisake-onna-manga-portrait
Am I beautiful?

"Hey! Which one of us do you think is the prettiest?"

It was the evening of a snowy day.
Three girls with face-masks and a boy carrying a school bag on his back were inside a dimly-lit tunnel.

"Who, I wonder?"

"I am!"

"No, I'm prettier!"

The boy remembered about a certain rumor that was the talk of the town those days. The dread had already taken over him, as could be seen from his face that grew paler with every passing moment.
He was still thinking of the best possible answer...

Japanese Cryptic: The Sofa

Translated from Japanese by Shishou(師匠)

Cryptic Story

My senpai, O-san, had a friend called S(pseudonym), who, out of Jealousy, turned into my senpai's stalker.

However, S went missing after some time.

We were quite relieved but not sure if it was another of S's tricks.

One day, a sofa arrived at O-san's house.

O-san had certainly ordered a sofa, and the arrived sofa was also very similar to the one ordered. However...

"What the hell is this? The color is all wrong. The sofa looks old too."

"You should call the manufacturer."

The manufacturer came to senpai's house and apologized for the mistake.

"I'm deeply sorry. I was told by your friend to deliver this sofa to you."

"It must be S!! Tch...harassing me in such a way!! "

"Leaving that aside, deliver me the sofa I ordered."

"Understood."

I was getting creepy vibes from the sofa, so I asked the manufacturer what they were going to do with that.

"Umm...what would you do to this old sofa."

"Ah...it's quite old, so it can't be recycled. Most likely, we'll put it in an incinerator."

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This sounds similar to a certain Edogawa Rampo's story.

Japanese Cryptic: The Devil's Crossing

Translated from Japanese by Shishou(師匠)

Cryptic Story

In my city there is an infamous crossing, called the devil's crossing, nearby a flower's shop. Every year, a lot of people end up losing their lives at that crossing.
Well, you might be thinking that it's just another crossing where accidents happen frequently, what's supernatural about it?

The bizarre part is that every year the accidents happen on the same day and at the same exact time.

My girlfriend, who was unaware of this, had come to my city last year. In a tragic event, she too ended up in an accident at that crossing.

I was devastated by the loss. Not wanting any more people to meet that same fate as my girlfriend, I decided to go to the crossing on the cursed day this year to solve the mystery.

I didn't care if it was the work of ghosts or whatnot. I just wanted to punish whoever was behind the accidents.

Even if I ended up dying during the whole ordeal, I would be content as I might be able to reunite with my girlfriend.

I searched that crossing from one end to another, hoping to find something outworldly, but everything seemed normal.

However, I did experience something that was...odd. Nobody paid any attention to me while I was moving from one corner of the crossing to other. Even the cops didn't bother looking at me.

"Am I just overthinking...?" I pondered.

I was about to leave when I noticed a big, blue truck heading towards me at a great speed.

.... By a hair's breadth, I avoided the accident.

The next thing I knew, I was standing there with tears rolling down my eyes.

Japanese Cryptic: The Restaurant

Translated from Japanese by Shishou(師匠)

Cryptic Story

For the past few days, a certain restaurant has been gaining much traction and has already been featured in multiple magazines, TV shows, and blogs.

I decided to visit it with my friends.

"They say that the dinner-course is amazing there!" my friend could barely contain himself.

A police inspection was going on near the restaurant.

"Did something happen here?"

"A person got murdered in this neighborhood recently. The culprit is not yet caught."

That's terrifying! But we didn't do anything, so we got nothing to worry about.

We arrive in front of the restaurant.

"I'm sorry but this restaurant closes at 5"

A waiter said that to us in an apologizing tone.

Tch...the inspection wasted a lot of our time.

It's no use now...

Japanese Horror: Shower Room

Translated from Japanese by Shishou(師匠)

Short Story

This all happened when I used to live in a cheap studio-apartment.

It was probably midnight. I was watching videos on the internet when, suddenly, my chihuahua  started barking at the shower-room.

Although I was scared a bit, I decided to head towards the shower-room. I made sure to avoid making any sound.

I opened the shower-room's door.

My chihuahua, without a moment's delay, entered into the room and continued the barking.

I peeked into the room to check for anything suspicious--nothing!

I entered the room, picked up the chihuahua in my arms, and when I was about to leave, I notice something dreadful.

In the mirror, I could see a reflection of a girl's face who was  inside the bathtub. Only her face was outside the water, and she was staring at me.

I quickly turned around to see bathtub, but nothing was there.

But again, she was still visible in the mirror!!

Without wasting anymore time, I escaped from the room, shut it close and locked it.

Now, I know why this apartment was so cheap.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TBH, I'd be scared more by the chihuahua than the ghost. When chihuahuas are angry, they look like demons from hell.

Japanese Cryptic: The Baby

Translated from Japanese by Shishou(師匠)

Cryptic Story

I was at the station, resting on a bench while waiting for my train. A lady came and sat next to me. She was holding a baby.

I like babies, so, unconsciously, I stared at the baby.

The lady noticed this and started chatting with me.

"Actually, this baby is a bag."

She removed the clothes of the baby to reveal the zipper on the stomach.

Now I realized that she was in fact right. The eyeballs too looked made of glass.

"Wow~ It's quite well crafted."

"It's quite difficult to make. Also takes a lot of time. I do it because I love recycling."

She said with a smile, and she boarded the train that had just arrived.

I, too, was supposed to board that train; however, I couldn't bring myself to get up from the bench. I looked at the train as it disappeared from my sight.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
That lady is accepting preorders for baby bags :D

Japanese Cryptic: CameraMan

Translated from Japanese by Shishou(師匠)

Cryptic Story

"One year ago, 7 students of our university died on an inhabited island. You heard about that?"

"Hmm...I remember. But why do you bring it now?"

"Actually, the whole incident was captured on a camera. The footage is here."

"You're not joking?" "Can't believe!" "Creepy!" Everyone said those words in unison.

"Well, let's see what's in the footage..."

They played the video.

In the beginning it looked just like any normal trip. However, a student's corpse was discovered that night. Everyone in the video looked frightened. They were shivering with fear--looked just like a movie.

Day after day, new bodies were discovered, and so the total students reduced to 2. Only a girl and the cameraman remained.

"I know I'm not the murderer, so that means YOU are the murderer!!" the girl said to cameraman. "Moreover, why the hell are you filming even under such circumstances!?" the girl added.

"No, I'm not. I'm recording everything to show it as a proof to the police." the cameraman replied.

But the girl was not believing him. She runs away from the cameraman. The cameraman chases after her.

Thereupon, the footage fades to black. The footage comes back: the disfigured bodies of the girl and a man("he is the cameraman!")could be seen--suicide by hanging.

Video ends.

Island and deaths! Reminds me of Battle Royale. Kiriyama!!

Japanese Cryptic: Older Sister

Translated from Japanese by Shishou(師匠)

Cryptic Story

Ghosts really exist.

When I was little, I could see my older-sister.

She wore the same dirty-clothes as me. She lived in our house.

But one day, I lost my ability to see her.

Daddy and Mommy won a lottery. They told me that the sister was a figment of my imagination.

We are quite happy now.

But the lottery money is decreasing day by day.

Japanese Cryptic: Sorcerer

Translated from Japanese by Shishou(師匠)

Cryptic Story

"I can make your dreams come true."

A self-proclaimed sorcerer said that to me when I was commuting to my university.

Jesting, is he? Though I would have not cared to get involved with him anymore, I, contrary to my normal behaviour, decided to tell him about my childhood dream.

"I've always wanted to be a doctor!"

"I see. Well then, you will be a doctor 9 years from now."

With those words, he bid his farewell.

....

By the time I graduated university, I had already forgotten about the incident.
After university, I was working as a normal salaryman.

One day, when I was going to a clinic to get a physical examination, I met him again in front of the clinic.

"9 years have passed. Have you become a doctor?"

"Ah! I remember you. No, I'm just a salaryman."

"Oh! In that case..."

He suddenly put something in my palm.

"Congrats! This is your medical licence. This clinic is now yours."

He calmly went away after saying that.

He was really a sorcerer.

Japanese Cryptic: Hikikomori

Translated from Japanese by Shishou(師匠)

Cryptic Story

Morning: I got up, had a light breakfast, brushed my teeth, and played games after that.

Afternoon: After a little more gaming and manga-reading, I talked with my GF(figurines).

Night: Showered and went to sleep.

This life is amazing I should say; however, I have one worry.

I don't know when the ground above me will crumble.

Admin Post: Should I integrate Disqus comments?

Hi everyone, Shishou here. So, for the past few months I've been thinking if I should scrap the blogger comment system in favor of the Disqus comment system. I feel that the current blogger comment system is a little restricting as it doesn't provide any direct way to embed images, gifs, videos etc into out comments. Also, the Disqus system will allow more interaction among us because of its neat features.

Similar to blogger's anon comment feature, it has guest comment system, so no worries.
The downside is that some of you, who like to have their profile picture in comment, will need to make a Disqus profile.

So, what do you guys say? If you guys are okay with the new system, then I'll implement it.

Japanese Cryptic: Heart

Translated from Japanese by Shishou(師匠)

Cryptic Story

People say that majority of humans are cold-hearted, but actually it's not true.

People have warm hearts. I learned this in elementary school when I touched my Dad's heart.

The sensation that you feel while touching people's hearts is amazing.

It seems a lot of people have not touched a heart even once.

Even at this moment, I can confirm...that hearts are warm.

Japanese Cryptic: Drifting Ship

Translated from Japanese by Shishou(師匠)

Cryptic Story

The ship got some problem in the engine and started drifting in the vast sea.

The captain took the blame on himself and tried to jump in the water to end his life. Before he could jump, the sailors caught him and tried their best to prevent the captain from committing suicide.

The captain, deeply moved by the crew's action, began weeping profusely.

Several months later, the ship was discovered.
All the sailors were rescued; however, the captain could not be found anywhere.

Japanese Cryptic: Fountains

Translated from Japanese by Shishou(師匠)

Cryptic Story

A village had two fountains. Everyone in that village lived a long life thanks to the fountains.

However there was a problem.

"The other fountain is unnecessary for us, right?"

One day,

"Help! There is a serious trouble. The old-man on the other side..."
"He'll get devoured if we don't hurry."

When we reached the site,

"Oh! So this is the reason why we need the other fountain."

Translated from Japanese by Shishou(師匠)

Cryptic Story

My wife makes the best hamburgers.

Today, however, the hamburgers tasted a little different than usual.

"Where did you get this meat from?" I inquired.

"It's from Shizuoka*."

"Tastes good."

Japanese Cryptic: Digging Holes

Translated from Japanese by Shishou(師匠)

Cryptic Story

An online friend of mine, whom I met through a net-game, has started a part-time job in Tokyo.

His job is to go to some specified place and dig holes.

All of the places he goes to are deserted. Sometimes he's asked to do his job in dense forests, while other times he's asked to do the job in deep mountains. The hole he's asked to dig, in any case, must be very deep.

He gets paid around 30k Yen-50k Yen for digging a single hole. The money is good so he got no complaints.

He, however, has not been on the internet for a while. I wonder what happened.

Japanese Cryptic: Elevator

Translated from Japanese by Shishou(師匠)

Cryptic Story

There was a certain mansion which had an elevator that was rumored to be haunted.

Just out of curiosity, I invited A-kun and B-kun to the mansion.

"Should we really be doing this?" A-kun said with a quivering voice.

"Huh? Ghosts don't exist!" B-kun assured A-kun.

"Yeah, yeah. Ghosts really don't exist." I added to B-kun's statement.

I entered the rumored elevator.

I: "Hmm...Certainly, looks creepy in here."

B: "I don't think we should be doing this."

A: "You are scared. lol"

I: "Lol, I think the same."

B: "Hey, I don't want to hear that from you."

A: "Aren't you trembling with fear? lol"

B: "Shut the hell up!!"

I: "Now, now, don't start fighting here. lol"

*Ding*

Elevator arrives, the door opens.

They both ran away with their tail between their legs.

Japanese Ghost Story : Sleep Paralysis

Translated from Japanese by Shishou(師匠)

Ghost Story

The following story is based on my personal experience during my High-school days.

As far as I remember, it was a hot and humid day. My summer holidays had just started so I didn't have anything to do. I was lying on my bed, taking a good nap thanks to the new air-con.

When I woke up, I realized that I was still half-asleep, but then something erratic happened. I came to realize that I was not able to move my body! I've never had any paranormal experience, but during those days I did experience sleep-paralysis frequently,so I had gotten used to them.

This time it happened during broad daylight, so there was no chance I was getting scared.

However, this sleep-paralysis didn't look like going away even when a lot of minutes passed. I sensed something strange.

The futon, which was covering me, started slithering down my bed.

Japanese Cryptic: The Beautiful things

Translated from Japanese by Shishou(師匠)

Cryptic Story

When  I was little, I loved marbles.

In the elementary school, I had a friend who got a bracelet made of beads, I was envious.

When I became a university student, I wanted to buy a jewel. I had a part-time job but it didn't pay me enough to by any jewel.

Now? Well, you see...the foreigners...there are lot of them in Japan now.

Why do they get piercings and tattoos all over their body. They all have something more valuable.
Blue, green, purple...sometimes those things are even in gold, silver and light-blue color.

Just like I said, I collect those things now. Though, it's quite difficult to store those things.
Why do the people who have those things give them to me? Well, they have interest in my hobbies.
I should tell you, it is very difficult to get those things.

The foreigners really love green tea, don't they?

Those things are so beautiful; I want more of them.

Japanese Cryptic: The Cursed Video

Translated from Japanese by Shishou(師匠)

Cryptic Story

I'm at my house right now, completely alone, watching a YouTube video.

The said video is titled as "Cursed Video".

The contents of the video are certifiably fear-inducing, but I'd say that the quality of the video is utter garbage.

At the end of the video, a message appeared.

"UOYDNIHEBERAEW"

What the hell? Seriously, that is not scary.

The video ended with that message.

Japanese Cryptic: The Cursed Mirror

Translated from Japanese by Shishou(師匠)

Cryptic Story

There was a rumor about a certain mansion in the suburbs of Mexico city. The rumor was that the mansion had a mirror, which when touched, would suck people inside of it.

A school-student called K decided to test it as he believed it was nothing but a superstition.  He went to the mansion together with his friends.

He went to the mirror and wiped the dust with his left-hand...but nothing erratic happened. "Meh! It's a superstition like I told you guys."

When he went back home, he washed his hands as the right-hand was feeling itchy because of dust.

Japanese Cryptic: The Burning Bike

Translated from Japanese by Shishou(師匠)

Cryptic Story

My friend told this story to me.

In the dead of night, while driving on a hilly road, my fried came across a grove that was up in flames.

He stopped his car. He noticed that, for some reason, the road was stained in red color. It was blood.

When he looked towards the burning grove, he noticed that it was actually a bike that was burning.

A person with helmet was collapsed near the bike. That person had lost an arm. My friend quickly called an ambulance.

He returned home after that. When he parked his car, he found that the rear wheel was stained red. Why did it happen?

Next day, the accident-victim came to his house to thank him for saving his life.

So, he really lost his arm...That's sad.

"When I got into the accident, did you see any other car there? I lost my arm because a car ran over it"

That guy really thought he was going to get killed there.

Japanese Cryptic: The Date

Translated from Japanese by Shishou(師匠)

Cryptic Story

We decided to meet for a date at Tokyo Tower at night.

But I got late as my car got stuck in the traffic.

When I reached the place 30-minutes late, she completely ignored me.

On the contrary, she started having a long phone conversation with someone.

When she was done with the call, she called a taxi and went away.

I know I was late, but she shouldn't have done this.  I can also get mad you know.

Without her I didn't have anything to do, so I decided to walk towards my house.

Japanese Cryptic: Her Umbrella

Translated from Japanese by Shishou(師匠)

Cryptic Story

He was met by a downpour as he exited the store.

He picked up an umbrella from the stand and begin moving  towards the road.

After moving for a while he noticed that somebody was following him.

"Excuse me!....That's my umbrella."

He turned around only to find a woman who had been completely soaked in the rain.

Somehow he mistook her umbrella for his own.

He apologized to her, and returned her umbrella.

In just a few moments, he found himself drenched because of the rain . He didn't mind and continued towards the house.

When he reached the house, he bid goodbye to her and entered the house for a shower.

After all, he was quite cold with the rain water and wanted to have a nice hot shower.

There was also an important thing he wanted to do, but he decided to wait till midnight.

When he got out of the shower, he dried his body and hair, dressed himself up, and exited the house.

It was still raining.

He opened up the umbrella and hasted to his house.

Japanese Cryptic: Ear Cleaning

Translated from Japanese by Shishou(師匠)

Cryptic Story

When I was little, I used to go to my neighbor's house to get my ears cleaned. The person living there was a woman who lived there all alone.

"I'll clean your ears, please come here." that's how she used to call me.

I would go to her, put my head and body in her lap, and then she would clean my ears. While cleaning she would say "Don't move."

To say clearly, I think she did a better work than my mother.

So nostalgic~

Japanese Urban Legend: Hanako-San

Translated from Japanese by Shishou(師匠)

Urban Legend

The incident I'm about to narrate happened when I was in the second-year of my elementary-school.

During those days, the urban legends such as Hanako-san and Kokkuri-san were quite popular among the students. Even in our school we had a toilet where the infamous Hanako-san was said to appear.

Corridor in the evening

According to the legend, you have go to the girl's-toilet, which is adjacent to the incinerator, at around 5 PM, and then knock 3-times on the first door while saying "Hanako-san, let's play!", if there is no reply, then do the same to the second door, then third door , and lastly to the 4th door. When you are done, you will hear a reply " Yes." from the 4th door.

Hanako-san of the toilet

Nobody knows what happens if the door opens as there is no mention of it in the legend.

We were a group of 4 friends: I, B-kun, C-kun, and D-kun. During those days, we would go to the nearby shrine and do the Kokkuri-san ritual all day.

For the Hanako-san ritual, it was mandatory to go alone, so we weren't quite interested in testing it out. But one day, while we were having luch, B-kun said that he wanted to test the Hanako-san legend.

Well, a lot of students had already tested the legend but they didn't find anything supernatural, but that could be because none of them went alone.

I wasn't particularly interested in testing it out, but due to B-kun constant persuasion we decided to go with it. We settled for a Rock-paper-scissors game that would decide who'll test the urban legend.
Ultimately, B-kun ended up losing the game and had to go alone in the rumored toilet that day.

We didn't want to stay in school till 5 PM, so we told B-kun we would wait for him in the nearby park.

School in evening

So, as our school got over, all of us, except B-kun, went  to the nearby park to wait until B-kun returned.

As the clock struck 5 in the evening, we started getting excited for B-kun's return....we waited, and waited, and kept on waiting....the clock struck 5:30, then 6:30, but there was no sign of B-kun.

Now all of us were contemplating what might have happened with B-kun. It was already getting dark and so we decided we should return to our homes too. As for B-kun, we assumed he must have chickened-out and went the home early.

The next day we were told of B-kun's death.

It seems he died an unnatural death inside the rumored toilet.

After the incident, we stopped fooling around with the supernatural.

Now, 15 years have passed since that incident, and sometimes I feel I should meet with my old pals C-kun, and D-kun, and have a detailed chat with them abut the unfortunate event that took B-kun's life.

Japanese Cryptic: Late Night Jogging

Translated from Japanese by Shishou(師匠)

Cryptic Story

Recently, a lot of murders have happened in my neighborhood.

Despite knowing this, I went on for my late-night jogging.

After a few minutes of jogging, I came across someone standing near the streetlight.

Slowly and slowly, I moved towards the streetlight.

That person seems like a weirdo; didn't even move an inch.

Could it be...that person is the murderer?

Realizing that, I increased my pace.

That person shrieked after looking at me.

I didn't want to get involved with the person; so I ignored.

I passed the guy as I made a run for my life.

After that, "I" wasn't seen by anyone.

Japanese Cryptic: Late Night Gaming

Translated from Japanese by Shishou(師匠)

Cryptic Story

Yesterday, I played video-games till late night.

While I was playing the game, I saw the reflection of a face on the black loading screen.

When I looked around, I found that it was the poster behind me that was reflecting in the screen.

I shouldn't have put that Higurashi poster there.

Japanese Cryptic: Misfortunate John

Translated from Japanese by Shishou(師匠)

Cryptic Story

John, who had been through a tragedy, went to the Orphanage's Sensei* and asked.

John: "Sensei, why don't I have Mom or Dad?"

Sensei: "Well, about your Mom and Dad....When you were little, they were murdered by a Black man during a robbery."

John: "Why can't I walk? Why can't I see?"

Sensei: "Because that robber did bad things to you."

John developed hatred for that Black man.

He started hating all the Black people in this world.

He knew it was not possible, but he wanted to search the robber and kill him.

One day ,the Sensei said to John.

Sensei: "Be happy, John. We are going to get your eyes and legs cured."

John went through surgery that cured both his legs and eyes.

The next day after he had received surgery, he used his new legs to jump in front of a train.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
* Sensei: Sensei is an honorific used to address Teachers, Doctors, etc. Here I didn't translate it as I wanted to keep the meaning vague.

I know this story is stereotyping black people, but I've translated the story as it is, so I apologize if  anyone finds it offensive.
