Japanese Cryptic: The toilet

Translated from Japanese by Shishou(師匠)

Cryptic Story

A school staff-member went to toilet at night.

He switched on the lights and went to the innermost stall.

After a while, he heard flushing sound from the neighboring stall. Then he could hear footsteps going away from that stall.

He didn't care if it was being used by someone or not.

He returned to the staff room and told about it to the other members. Hearing it, the faces of all the members turned pale.

They all asked "But why?"

    1. I don't know the explanation correctly. But I think he went into the female toilet. That's why he didn't care about the neighboring stall; he didn't want to get caught. But if that were the case, I wonder why the lights weren't switched on when he arrived. This could mean that the thing in neighboring stall was a ghost.

    2. "After a while" ==> for how long? From the first reading, I thought the school staff is a janitor. So he start cleaning from the innermost stall. The weird thing for me is, how long the staff notice someone using a stall since he got in? That could mean "someone" is already in the neighboring stall or he did not hear "someone" walking inside. But of course it was a ghost ^^

    3. Hmm...I didn't think about him being a janitor. Does Janitor come under school staff? I don't have any idea.XD
One thing clear is that he didn't mention anywhere about someone walking inside the neighboring stall. He noticed it only when he heard the flushing sound.

    4. Sometimes Janitors do count as part of the school staff.
On a side note, I thought his co-workers were horrified because he had gone to the bathroom and then left without washing his hands.

    5. That could also be the case. But it does sound funny. Haha.

  2. Somebody was in the one of the bathroom stalls in the dark - the school staff member switched on the lights when he went in. Usually, that's not normal.

    1. Yeah, I wonder why someone was using the stall in the dark.

    2. And probably that's why everybody else asked "But why?", because what could have caused something like that to occur?

    3. I think "But Why?" refers to the narrator going to the wrong toilet. That's what I guessed from the original story.

  3. This one's easy- they're wondering why there was someone in the toilet at night. Staff are the only ones there, so if it's not one of them... who is it?

    Probably Hanako-san.

    1. That's true! Especially if there were "all" references to the staff, meaning all the staff were in the staff room and now are scared.

    2. Your mention of Hanako-san reminds me of a story on Hanako-san that I'm yet to translate.
