Japanese Urban Legend: The phone call from Mary

Translated from Japanese by Shishou(師匠)

Urban Legend

Mary san image
Hello...?
You are all alone at home and suddenly your phone starts ringing.

You pick it up and the person on the other side says,

"I'm Mary. Right now, I'm at X."

Even if you cut the phone call, it will ring again.

"I'm Mary. Right now, I'm at (Some place closer to your house)."

And then it rings again.

"I'm Mary, Right now, I'm in front of your house."

You daringly open up the front door only to find nothing.

You think someone was playing prank on you.

But the phone rings again.

"I'm Mary. Right now, I'm behind you."

If you look back, she stabs you with a sharp tool, and you die due to blood loss.

How to survive:

1. Lock all the doors.
2. Don't take the call.
3. Stand with a wall behind your back.
4. Even if she is behind you, don't look back.
5. Escape from the house using anything other than the main gate.

  1. Do you ever plan on editing these stories so that they read more smoothly in English or do you leave them closer to their raw, literal interpretations for a reason?

I would be willing to help re-write them so that they are more natural to English speaking readers.

    1. I translate them in such a way that the translated text remains closer to the original text. This is because it helps to maintain the originality of the text. But I would like to give a try to your idea. If you like you can send the re-written version to my mail Id. I'd put your name in the credits.

    2. Thanks for replying. This particular one would not be such a good example for this because it's like a Japanese version of Bloody Mary. It's pretty much just and explanation and instructions, which is what this is. Let me poke around with one of the other stories and I will get back to you.
